Tension-Type Headache
Tension-type headache is the most common form of headache. This headache is a tight feeling, sometimes described as like having your head "in a vice". Often there is soreness in the neck and shoulders associated with these type of headaches. These headaches are usually recurrent and can be daily, or weekly in some people.
This type of headache is not simply "caused by stress", rather it is a complex disorder. Tension-Type headache sufferers will typically have a forward head posture, and the muscles in the upper part of the neck, around the base of the skull, are tight, and tender to touch. The headache will be felt in this area, as well as around the eye or over the temple.
These headaches can be triggered by multiple factors including mechanical dysfunction in the neck, poor sleep patterns or lack of sleep, and of course emotional stress. It is important to address all of these factors to give you best overall management strategy.
Stressful situations arise for all of us from time to time, and these can not necessarily be avoided, but it is important to develop strategies for dealing with stress, especially if it is ongoing.
