Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to our clinic. We understand how back pain can interfere with your life and stop you from doing things you love to do.
We are passionate about giving you the right advice to get you back to those activities you love as soon as possible.
What is back pain?
Back pain is a term used to describe pain anywhere between your rib cage and your buttocks. It can range from acute, strong pain to dull, aching, niggling pain, and can affect different people in different ways. Common labels used to describe back pain are:
- Disc bulge or disc prolapse
- Disc degeneration
- Sacroiliac joint pain
- Facet joint arthropathy
- Osteoarthritis
- Slipped disc
- "Bad Back"
How do you help low back pain?
We first want to understand your story. How did your pain start, how has it changed, and what is it stopping you from doing? There are many factors that can contribute to back pain, so we want to understand your unique condition and make a plan to get you back to doing every thing you love.
Our treatment plans usually involve hands on therapy to get you feeling better, exercises to help you get moving and increase your strength and control, and advice and education so you can understand why you have pain and what you can do to help your self at home.
How long does back pain take to get better?
Sometimes for pain that has just started, we can have you feeling great again in just 1-3 weeks. This may involve some hands on treatment, simple exercises and advice on what it is safe to do. We will identify the factors that led to your pain and help you understand these so you can hopefully avoid the back pain returning.
For pain that is recurring (for example you get an episode of pain every 6-12 months) we look to create a plan to get you out of the "band-aid" or "quick fix cycle". We will work to settle your pain quickly, but also prescribe some exercises or activities, or ergonomic changes to reduce the chance that you will get an episode again in the future.
If your pain is persistent (ie has been present for 3 months or more) we will help you to understand why you still have pain, make a plan to have you feeling more comfortable, guide you back to activity, provide optimal treatment, and help you take control of your pain. This may involve a plan over a 3 month period, depending on what factors are contributing to your pain.
