Persistent Low Back Pain
Back pain is the most common problem that presents to both physiotherapists and chiropractors. For many people the pain is short-lived, but unfortunately in some cases it can become persistent. Back pain can be very frustrating, limiting daily tasks, sporting and social activities.
3 tips for improving your back pain
- Movement: Moving more will help you feel better over time. We know that pain makes you want to move less, but long periods of rest lead to stiffness in joints and weakness in muscles. Start gently with things like walking around the house and simple stretches. As you feel a little better, slowly increase what you do. For long term management, regular exercise is important. The good news is, most things help! So walking, swimming, pilates, yoga, weight training, running can all be helpful to reduce back pain, pick something you love to do, and keep doing it!
- General health: We all know the basics, but it can be hard to be consistent with our modern lifestyles. Drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, getting enough exercise, reducing excess weight, reducing alcohol intake, and stopping smoking can all help to reduce back pain. Sometimes a self audit, or a visit to the GP can help you get back on track.
- Ergonomics: We don't have to be too technical with this. Just think to yourself, what tasks or activities do I do for long periods every week? It might be sitting at a computer, standing, lifting and bending or driving. We want your body to be in a comfortable position, and have the muscle endurance to make sure your body stays in the right position for as long as you need. If you are not sure about this, physios and chiros are experts in helping you to understand what a good position is.
