Dry Needling
Ongoing muscle tightness and pain is a common problem people come into the clinic with. This can be in:
- hips and legs
- arms and shoulders
- necks and backs
We have started to get more people asking about whether dry needling could be an effective treatment for these type of symptoms.
Is Dry Needling the same as Acupuncture?
While both use very thin needles to penetrate the skin, dry needling is used by skilled, trained chiropractors and physiotherapists to target tight parts of muscles. It is based on Western physical medicine and evaluation of pain patterns, movement patterns, joint function and muscle tests.
Acupuncture is based on Eastern medicine principles.
Is Dry Needling a treatment used on it's own?
No. Like massage, dry needling is just one tool used to address pain, muscle tightness and movement restrictions.
It is usually used as part of a treatment program that includes advice on appropriate activities, exercise prescription, and other hands on techniques such as massage, mobilisation or manipulation to address all factors that are contributing to your pain and help to give you relief more quickly.
