TMJ (Jaw) Pain
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems can be very debilitating. Pain, clicking, difficulty chewing and eating, and difficulty opening the mouth wide are the typical symptoms our patients seek help for.
How can physiotherapists and chiropractors help?
There are a number of very powerful muscles that clench your teeth. Grinding and clenching can lead to these muscles becoming tight. Like any other joint the TMJ can dysfunction when muscles are tight leading to pain, clicking or a restricted range of motion. We can help by using massage techniques on the muscles and prescribing simple exercises to improve the muscle function.
We work with your dentist
Many dentists refer patients to us to manage the muscle function of the jaw. You may have a splint to prevent grinding at night, or you may have been offered alternative treatments like botox injections to reduce tension in the muscles that clench your jaw. We will communicate with your dentist to make sure that we are working together to get you eating the foods you love and living without pain as soon as possible.
