Is physiotherapy covered by medicare?
We often get asked, "Can I use medicare for physiotherapy?"
The short answer is yes - but only in specific situations.
If you have a chronic (ongoning) condition, your GP may be able to place you on a GP chronic condition management plan (GPCCMP). This was previously known as an EPC.
This plan allows you to access up to 5 subsidised allied health visits per calendar year, which can be used for services like physiotherapy and chiropractic.
So how does it work?
- Book an appointment with your GP. They will assess whether you qualify for a GPCCMP
- Ask for a referral to your physiotherapist or chiropractor
- Bring your referral into our Willoughby clinic
- Claim a medicare rebate for your session. Please note there will be a gap between the session fee and the medicare rebate.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible if you have a condition like:
- Osteoarthritis or chronic joint pain
- Ongoing lower back pain
- Recovery from surgery or injury that requires ongoing care
- Chronic illnesses that affect movement
If you're unsure whether you qualify, your GP is the best place to start.
If you have any questions about medicare referrals, feel free to call us at WIlloughby Physiotherapy and Chiropractic, and we are happy to talk you through it.
